Kamares Aqueduct

Kamares Aqueduct Guide — Kavala

Sixty arches carry Ottoman engineering across the ravine — the postcard silhouette visible from your ship on approach to Kavala harbour.

The Kamares aqueduct (Aqueduct of Suleiman the Magnificent) supplied Kavala with water from Mount Symvolo in the 16th century. It bridges the gap between the lower harbour and the Panagia Old Town — a natural goal for cruise passengers climbing from the pier. You can photograph it from below, walk alongside it, or frame it from upper lanes without a separate transfer.

Built during Suleiman's reign, the aqueduct replaced earlier Roman and Byzantine waterworks. Arches in two tiers cross the ravine where the old town climbs sharpest — engineers turned geography into infrastructure. Today it is pedestrian-friendly: stairs and paths connect harbour level to upper Old Town via the aqueduct zone.

Most visitors encounter Kamares while walking to the Imaret or fortress. Allow 20–30 minutes for photography and the crossing itself; longer if you treat it as part of a two-hour Old Town loop. Morning side-light illuminates the arches; midday shots can feel harsh in summer.

The aqueduct requires no ticket for exterior viewing. Combine with harbour breakfast bougatsa on the way up and harbour lunch on the way down for a compact non-Philippi port day.
